Re: Suggested Topics

My department just started doing this as well.
Here are a couple of unusual topics.

1. Overhead bay doors.
They should be either opened all the way or closed all the way.
They should never be partially opened. We have had some incidents with this.
Doors opened to about 5-6 ft will be hit by heads if someone is wearing a ball cap.

An exception might to when the door is opened only a foot for some ventilation, etc.

2. Apparatus compartments.
Always close compartments. This sounds obvious but lets say you want to trim a tree limb out behind the station. You take a hand saw off the engine or truck with  the intent of bringing it back when you are done, but you get a run before you are done. ALWAYS close the door when you take it out and then open, and close it again when you bring it back.

We were having a class about unusual hand tools and I asked someone to get something off the Engine to talk about. A few minutes later we got a run. Guess what happened? The Truck Firefighter forgot to mention that the compartment door was open on the engine.
